Remembering now that I don’t think I posted anyt

Remembering now that I don’t think I posted anything about Tiki when it closed.

For a good chunk of patrons, this was just a little backup spot for partying in the gray area between the Gayborhood and Midtown. We were a bit of a black sheep, both in the larger company of bars (same owners as Garage, Time, Heritage) and in the neighborhood.

I think things started to turn around when we embraced that. I started playing there a few years back, and the way I play open format: sorta fencewalking between people-pleasing and seeing how much weird shit I can get away with.. I think it just fit there. By being the overflow bar in the area we ended up with a diverse crowd almost accidentally, and I always felt like the no brow, come as you are, accepting vibe behind the bar and from the staff was the same thing I was doing musically.

And then having taken over the DJ booking there about a year ago, I made a point over the following months to both book almost entirely DJs who weren’t straight, or weren’t white, or weren’t men *and* not to bandy this about as some sort of novelty. The people who came and played were great at what they did, period.

It was working too. We were becoming a destination, the bar rings were steadily climbing, management was set to spend more money on talent and more money on improving the space. Then COVID came, the lease wasn’t affable to negotiation, and that was that.

I don’t know what nightlife is going to look like once we’re able to have it again, but I do hope to pick up in this direction. Thanks to everyone who clocked in over there, performing or bartending or barbacking or running security or running house. And to the party people who ran with it too. Glad to have been a part of it.
